Quote of the moment

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

*What Is A Geek To Do?

To the Warren Zevon tune

He was born in a Midwest college town
Spent most of his time playing the clown
Getting a Physics degree
As if that that would make up for being geeky
He grew up small an not very strong
Except in the skin, he was used to being wronged
He wasn't very good in public.

His talent was often in getting beat up
It helped a lot once he learned to wear a cup
Pee Wee and Junior, Midget and Mite
These were names from friends, not those who wanted to fight
Dates were things for others around him
Not something he could experience even on a whim
Leroy's Harem was a joke,
Six beauties who thought he was gay so hung around him.
He was always safe to be around him.

A blond to the left, that was Ann
Brunette in front was Lynn
While the one on the right was Sue
Red and Brown in back were Mary and Chu
Linda came and went, she was a blond too
All out of his class, and they would have run
If they knew what he wanted to do.

When he finally stumbled on someone
Or rather failed to get out of the way
They were all so shocked they declined to witness as they wed
Seems they felt mislead, though not anything he had said
They still were shock and felt I mislead.

Geekism at least got him good work
A lot better than digging in the dirt
And out of that God forsaken town
Nothing ever happening, nothing new going down
Good work proved you want to flip bits
Twelve hours a day until you are at the end of you wits.

Work yourself into the ground for those who don't care
Until you are used up and they toss you like a spare.
But what else is a geek Midwestern boy to do
Just what do you expect a geek loser to do?

After years of giving all he had
Without appreciation, not even being allowed to be sad
He decided to become a farmer
And a bit of a bird charmer
All while still working for an ingrate
Mostly despised by both small and great.

Finally had enough, just when he found someone
And for once he took the chance, he did not run
She was looking too, in fact she actually made the move
But he did not exactly need a shove
For he loved her with all his heart
And never from her side ever wanted to part
But though she said it was not lies
And truth agreed in her eyes
She would not stay with him
She left like she swore she would not
And left his whole heart in a knot.

In the winter wind, she said the love was still true
And they would find a way to get through
If would only be for a little while, not to stay
She would be back on a very soon day
But when the day got close at hand
Another figured out what was planned
And pressed the issue with full force
Forced her to make a different choice.

Now she lives a different lie
The life of choice of those who pry
Into issues that were not the own
Happy to let him rot alone
Others could not let her be
And one would not set her free
So she chose good enough
Fighting for something new might be too rough
And what is left for the geek to do?

I'm just an idealist and a hopeless romantic
Thought I could win with truth, not sycophantic
Big enough ego that I thought I had a chance to be happy
Yes, Yes I really am that sappy
But this time it was not just my usual dark cloud
Dulling up the silver lining
This time my very mind go ploughed
My entire reality got a redefining
This time my mind was broken
By all of reality I was forsaken.

Now what is left for this simpleton to do?
Just one more lost soul with no place to go
Nothing left to do.
